The governments of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan will be signing a memorandum of understanding to let citizens travel visa-free between them. The decision was made when Abdulla Aripov, Prime Minister of Uzbekistan visited Tajikistan on January 11th, 2018. They also discussed on border crossing measures. Aripov and Qohir Rasulzoda, Tajikistan Prime Minister, will be soon signing a border protocol sometime in the future. Aripov was on a two-day tour to Tajikistan and also met the country’s president, Emomali Rahmon on January 10th, 2018. The new visa rules, allow travel into the other country visa-free for up to 30 days. They also agreed for building checkpoints at their shared border and will open bus links to connect the two Central Asian countries. The two nations might have also come to a conclusion that the disputed Farhod hydropower station, a Soviet-era dam, according to the sources. According to their rumor agreement, the land on which the power station is will be a Tajikistan property while Uzbekistan will own the infrastructure and its equipment. After the Soviet Union was defeated in 1991, things didn’t go well with the two nations. They had many tense issues regarding the hydro station, borders, and transit rules. The relationship finally improved after Islam Karimov, President, died in 2016. Shavkat Mirziyoev, a current president, who replaced Karimov is the real reason why the relationship progressed. Unknown land of Tajikistan Tajikistan is a Central Asian country, surrounded by Uzbekistan, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan. It often gets ignored between all these countries but is truly a gem.
