Indians Receiving 67% to 72% of the Total H-1B Visas Issued by the US

S Jaishankar, Foreign Minister has told in the Parliament that Indians have received between 67% to 72% of the whole H-1B visas announced by the U.S. in the previous five financial years and that no comprehensive reforms have been made to the US H-1B visa program so far.

The Government of U.S. has adopted specific administrative measures concerning the US H-1B visa program that has started more comprehensive scrutiny of H-1B appeals and increased documentation demands, and the problem was raised with Mike Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State, last month, the Minister said Parliament in the previous week in response to a query.

Statistics About the US H-1B Visa

The statistics reveal that Indian citizens have obtained between 67 percent to 72 percent of the entire H-1B visas announced by the U.S. in the former five financial years. H-1B visa has performed an essential role in promoting the movement of skilled Indian professionals, Jaishankar highlighted.

The Indian Government has closely consulted all stakeholders and involved with the U.S. Congress and Administration on issues associated to the movement of professionals from India, along with those pertaining to the H-1B program, the Minister told in reply to a question in Parliament.

Most recently, problems of H-1B visa were increased during the visit of the Michael R. Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State, to India on 26 Jun 2019, the Minister said to the lawmakers.

In our meetings, we have indicated that this has been an association that is mutually beneficial, which should be nourished. Indian skilled professionals have committed to the development and growth of the economy of US and have supported the US to maintain its innovation advantage and competitive edge. The US side has appreciated the contribution made by citizens of India in the US.
