In a US report, it was revealed that as of 5th Oct, they were three citizens of India in every four holders of H-1B visa.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) revealed to the public that as on the 5th of October, United States had about 419,637 foreigners working in the country as holders of H1B visas. Out of these large numbers of foreigners, 309,986 of them are Indians.
In spite of a large number of foreigners holding H-1B visas in the US
, the report revealed a massive gender inequality - three-quarters of the holders were found to be males. Thus, of the total number of 419,637, females were 106,096 or 25.3%, and 311,997 (74.3%) are males.
noted that the issue of gender inequality was more prevalent among the Indians. For the 309,986 Indians in the program, females are 63,220 or 20.4% while the males dominate with 245,517 or 79.2%.
Over 1,249 Indians on this visa program are considered missing or unaccounted for hence are placed in a category that reads missing/others.
After Indians, Chinese rank second highest among H1B visa
holders in the US with a total of 47,172 people or 11.2% of the population. Among the Chinese, gender difference is low. There are about 21,342 or 45.2% females and 25,718 or 54.5% males.
Apart from India and China, only Canada and South Korea account for 1.1% of the population of H1B holders in the US. The rest of the countries constitute less than one percent of the population.
The Philippines has more females (52.7% -1712) in the program than the males (46.7% - 1519) counterpart, thus making it the only country among the top 10 of the visa category with more females than men.
This information was broadcasted some days after the Unified Fall Agenda by Trump's Administration was released. In the agenda, plans were made to redefine speciality occupations under the H1B visa
and also redefine the nature of relationships that Employers have with their Employees.
The proposed regulation aims at bringing in only the best nationals into the country and preventing abusive use of the H1B visa and coincides with the aim of the "hire American agenda"
of Trump's Administration.
plans to introduce a system of pre-registration for international students schooling in the US. In this system, if 85,000 international students already schooling in the US successfully get H1B visas
, no applicant living abroad would be able to apply.
