Undisturbed by Brexit and the two-year poststudy work visa discontinuation, Indian skilled workers, students and tourists are crowding to Britain. The number of students from India preferring to study in Britain has exploded up 42% in the former year (1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019) and the number of Tier 4 visas announced to Indian students is now at its greatest level since 2011-2012 at 21,881, as per the recent immigration statistics published by the UK home office.
In 2011 Theresa May, who is home secretary at that time terminated the two-year poststudy work visa that had given Britain as an engaging place for students from India. That had driven to a 55% reduction in Indian student numbers moving to Britain, from 51,218 in 2010-11 to 22,757 in 2011-12. It moved down further to 15,388 in 2017-18.
India maintained its place as the best country being awarded Tier 2 skilled work visas with 56,322 admitted in the preceding year, significantly higher than any other nation. The subsequent highest was the US at 9,693.
The number of UK Tier 1 visas being announced to Indians also increased within July 2018 and June 2019 to 306 related to 216 the year earlier. In that time, apart from different categories of Tier 1 visas awarded to Indians, 12 were awarded Tier 1 (investor) visas known as “golden visas” that can be obtained for £2 million and 72 Indians obtained Tier 1 (exceptional talent) visas.
Brexit has performed a significant part in the renovated hope for a post-study work visa, but further importantly it is the action led by Boris Johnson’s brother Jo Johnson that has inspired hope within Indian students that Britain is surely welcoming them again.
Jo Johnson has tabled a bill amendment, making its move through Parliament, to re-launch the two-year post-study work policy. Presently, students can stay for 6 months after completion of their graduation.
