Study Abroad Travels and Costs Impacted by Brexit Decision

Though the distance between the U.K. and the U.S. is about 5,000 miles, the impact of Brexit is also felt by many students in U.S. colleges.

The National Association of Foreign Students Advisers observed a 2.3% increase in the number of students from the U.S. studying overseas in the 2016/2017 session. “This represents about 1.6% of all U.S. students enrolled at institutions of higher education in the U.S. and about 10% of U.S. graduates.” The Association said.

There is eagerness in students to study in the United Kingdom, but the complications surrounding Brexit maybe experience too.

According to the BBC, The United Kingdom has been a member of the European Union – then the European Economic Community – since 1973. In 2016, a referendum was held to decide on the withdrawal of the UK from the EU. After negotiations for three years, Teresa May and other leaders in the UK have been unable to reach an acceptable deal.

A graduate assistant at John Brown University, Bethany Smith observed that many of the youths did not cast their votes because they saw it as a protest.

Extended Stay via Brexit

Presently, citizens from the US need only a passport to visit the EU and UK for three and six months respectively. However, due to the possible effects of Brexit, there may be an increase in the cost of students’ visas and the extended time for US students to remain in the UK after their studies may be shortened.

Brexit has a lot of future possibilities which include full negotiation with the European Union, general elections, probably another referendum or no Brexit at all.

According to BBC News, Brexit was due on 29th March; however a withdrawal agreement hasn’t been reached between the UK and EU as such, the EU leaders extended the deadline to April 12th, 2019. Hence, the UK citizens and students await a full decision to be reached on the Brexit deal.
