The House of Commons leader, Andrea Leadsom mentioned on Monday, 10th December that the Immigration Policy Paper for the British Government's Post-Brexit system is going to be published before the year runs out.
According to Prime Minister Theresa May, the government plans to publish the white paper before the end of 2018. She pointed out how important it is for UK to have an actively running and progressive immigration system that satisfies the demands of businesses trying to get foreign employees and also satisfy the requirements of the parliamentarians who voted that the borders of UK should be controlled.
She also said that the new policy would entail equal treatment of citizens of European Union Countries and those from other places, and prioritization of highly skilled workers.
EU Workers Affected By New Policy Paper
EU workers who would like to stay in the UK
after Brexit may encounter rigorous documentation procedures and application deadline for settled status when it comes to the no-deal scenario in the new policy paper.
According to the paper from the Department for Exiting the EU, on the 29th of March, 2019, which is the Brexit day, those EU citizens who do not have valid proof of their residency in the UK
would not be allowed to apply for settled status. There are still uncertainties on how individuals who have already acquired the settled status or who were once residents of the country but currently stay elsewhere will be treated under this new policy.
A co-convenor of the Cavendish Coalition, Nadra Ahmed said that the EU settlement scheme
which is to kick off in March 2019 takes care of the families that already reside in the UK
, but the policy fails to state if there would be any more provision for those people coming in after 29th March 2019 or before January 2021; the period which the new government policy would be implemented.
