The new analysis has it that an immigration system that will shake the Midlands and the North-East of England has been set up to stop a large number of EU immigrants with low skills from residing in Britain.
Studies have shown that about 90% of workers who are presently working in the English speaking regions would not be qualified when considered under the new system, and that is a sign that the new immigration system set up by the Government could cause a shortage in the working population of certain regional economies.
Theresa May has promised to set up a Post-Brexit immigration system that is not based on favoritism for the citizens of EU. There have already been tons of complaints from various businesses concerning the poor supply of skilled workers available due to the massive intake of EU citizens that are low skilled workers. The policy would effectively qualify only skilled workers who are citizens of Europe or not.
The various opinions on the proposed new system
Ministers said that part of the future contract that Britain has with the bloc would be changing the process of getting to meet an EU worker. Nevertheless, the cabinet has come to a conclusion that every immigrant should be treated alike following Brexit. It is already an existing practice that workers who are non-citizens of Europe must have passed the income and skills test to qualify for a work visa.
An analysis which was conducted by the Institute for Public Policy Research shows that the new policy would affect certain regions more than others. Based on the analysis, it was seen that in the North-East there would be over 94.5% EU migrant workers that would be disqualified when evaluated on the basis of the rules for workers who are non-citizens of EU. 89.6% in East Midlands, 89.3% in West Midlands, and 60% of EU migrants in London would also be disqualified.
A member of the Institute for Public Policy Research, Marley Morris said that there are higher chances for the regions outside London to be the most negatively affected areas by the intended Post-Brexit rules. He further mentioned that in the Midlands and North-East, citizens of EU are most likely to be seen working menial jobs that require low skills; an indication that they are primarily allowed to face new thresholds. He said it was a call for the need to make adjustments in the new system in UK and that the Government should set up rules that would identify the individual needs of the different regional economies.
The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) of the government suggested that there should be a shift to a global system in that when the Brexit period is over (from the year 2021), there would be a new system which entails that immigrants who intend to settle in Britain for more than a period of six months should obtain a visa. On the other hand, Theresa May has secured the rights of immigrants from EU although no agreement has been reached.
A report from the MAC claims that the controversial unrestricted movement allowed in EU neither has a large negative effect as some people say it has nor the clear benefits that others say it has.
One of the spokesmen from a Home Office noted that after they have left EU, they will once again have control of their borders and establish an immigration system which would be beneficial to every region of the UK. According to him, they had commissioned the report to have a better understanding of the impact that citizens of EU have on the labor market of UK. In the opinion of the government, citizens of UK are very important to the nation’s economy and would not want them to stop.
