Canada Opens Path for Immigration to Rural Areas

Eleven communities across Canada have been selected by the Canadian government, to project a new immigration program, with the aim to attract immigrants, to the Northern And Rural Communities. Due to the aging population, youth exodus and decline in birth rate, these regions face severe labor shortages; as such, the program’s goal is to ensure immigrants arrive in these regions.

Today, a formal announcement was made by the Immigration Minister, Mr. Ahmed Hussen in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

According to Mr. Hussen, a similar program was used in Atlantic Canada and the results have been tremendously excellent, as such he believes that when new immigrants “with the required skills” are brought in and retained in the northern and rural parts of Canada, the results will be similar to that of Atlantic Canada.

The nominated communities include:

1) Claresholm, Alta

2) Vernon, B. C.

3) West Kootenay region of B. C.

4) Brandon, Man.

5) Gretna-Rhineland-Altona-Plum Coulee, Man.

6) Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

7) Timmins, Ontario.

8) Thunder Bay, Ontario

9) North Bay, Ontario

10) Sudbury, Ontario

11) Moose Jaw, Sask

Work will begin this summer, where the communities will be aided, by the government, to select immigration candidates, for permanent residence this fall. However, 2020 is the Expected Arrival Date for the new immigrants under this program.

Sustained Vibrancy of Rural Areas

The selected communities represent the affected areas to lay out a “scheme” for the remaining parts of Canada.

Under the existing federal economic immigration programs, about 78% of new immigrants in the country, prefer to stay in the big cities, like Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto.

According to the Minister for Rural Economic Development, Bernadette Jordan, there will be an enhancement in the growth of the communities economically through this program by the use of community-driven approaches, to meet the different needs in the labour market.

She praised the success of the program in Atlantic Canada, and expressed her pleasure, towards the introduction of the program, to other rural parts of the country, for continued vibrancy in such parts.
